We are slow rolling back into some good computer and technology deals of the day. Let’s start off with a computer deal for those who need some high end specs on the go.

A bright side…

A bright side to the lack of deals today is that not only are you not spending money, but you have a chance to re-evaluate what equipment you already have and what you need. Prioritize what is slowing you down. You might want to get a new version or upgrade of something “just because”, however if it isn’t going to add a benefit then it’s just a waste of money.

In todays day in age with war and inflation touching our daily lives, make sure anything you buy is adding productivity or efficiency to your workflow or office setup. As a wise man once told me, “if it doesn’t make you go faster, what’s the point.” He was talking about cars, but the sentiment applies to your home office setup as well.

Computer Daily Deal

Not much in the world of computer and technology daily deals today. :_( And this deal leads to a story…

The one deal that I feel could be worth it for some of you is the Microsoft – Surface Laptop 4 – 15” Touch-Screen – AMD Ryzen 7 Surface Edition – 8GB Memory – 256GB SSD (Latest Model) – Platinum at Best Buy. On sale for $999.99, you’re saving $300.

I say it that way specifically because I have a love-hate relationship with Microsoft Surface products. More on that below.

The good…

This Surface Laptop 4 is loaded with new tech. Great for video calls, you’ve got the Studio Mics. This helps to make your audio sound great for those on the other end by reducing ambient noise. The Dolby Atmos audio also makes sound pop in such a small package. The PixelSense touchscreen is top notch and super responsive. And at 15″, its plenty big. Possibly even the best screen on the market in this category of laptop. It totes an impressive all-day battery in this configuration, up to 17.5 hours. That could be considered it’s best feature over all.

The not so good…

I have to be honest with you guys, otherwise you will not trust what I tell you about these products. While this is a great sale, $300 off, I feel this one is not for everybody. The niche for this laptop is someone who doesn’t want/need a 2-in-1 but wants most of their features, as well as a solid performer that’s lightweight, but doesn’t need powerhouse specs. You guys have seen that there have a been a bunch of other deals lately on laptops that totally out perform this laptop in most ways, minus the touchscreen. So if that’s what you want, an amazing touchscreen without the bend back keyboard, this one’s for you.

It’s only got 8 GB of memory, the minimum I would suggest in a laptop these days. A 256 GB SSD hard drive, while being really fast, will also be just the minimum I would suggest for most people. I’m also an Intel processor fan compared to the AMD chips. They do better with most of the applications I use, but most people won’t notice the difference to be fair. This AMD Ryzen is specifically designed for the Microsoft Surface line, and has a good Radeon GPU to back it up. It will get the job done graphically, but don’t expect high end performance on the graphic side.

My old Surface Pro 3

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 was the first Surface product I felt that Microsoft got right, and so I purchased it right when it came out. Let me be clear, I LOVED that 2-in-1. I had even suggested others purchase it, and some did. It was around that 12″ screen size, perfect in my opinion for working on the go. I was doing a LOT of photo editing in Photoshop at the time, which was extremely easy to do with the Surface Pen and the touchscreen on the commuter train.

But, the longer I had the Surface Pro 3, and the less I was using it on the go, the more I found fault with it. I could not upgrade any of the internal hardware myself without a high risk of cracking the screen. Hard drive dies? Too bad. But go ahead and put it on the Surface Pro dock and you’ll be fine right? Wrong. Even that dock ended up being underwhelming once I compared it to the other docks on the market. Poor external monitor ports really were the kicker.

And at least the Surface Laptop 4 above has a USB C port now. Microsoft really stuck it to us with that proprietary Surface Port. All that port has been good for is plugging into power or the Surface dock.

In my eyes, it comes down to one question. If I went back in time, would I buy my Surface Pro 3 again having had these experiences and knowing what I do now? The answer likely would have been “no” probably. The only issue is that I would struggled to find a better 2-in-1 back in 2014.

In the end…

We can’t change the past, only live in the present and look to the future. And my future does NOT contain any new Surface products. In my opinion, unless they are on sale, they are not worth the price you’re paying for that Microsoft name. Other companies have caught up and you’re able to get better specs for around the same price, and you’re able to upgrade or change hardware as you go.

I’m a big fan of 2-in-1 laptops, having used them for years. They really marry the benefits of a laptop and a table into once ultra usable device. The Lenovo Flex 5 allows the screen to bend backwards 360⁰ and lay flat, allowing you to hold and use it like a tablet. This is super efficient for while you’re on the go, possibly sitting in tight spaces like a commuter train or airplane. It will also hold at any degree in between, allowing you to get creative with how you position it. Make an A frame to watch a movie? Done. Flip it around so that the keyboard is out of the way so you can use the included Lenovo Digital Pen (a fancy stylus) for drawing, note taking, or designing? Boom! Ready to go!

The good…

Touchscreen? Check. 2-in-1? Check. Beyond that, this has a good 14″ Full HD (1920 x 1080) screen with a very narrow bezel. It’s also has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and a super fast SSD hard drive to make everything move at lighting speeds. Couple that with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 and you’ve got a speedy little package. The AMD Ryzen 5 processor with Radeon graphics is no slouch either, although you won’t be playing any high end games on it. Top that all off with a battery rated for 12 hours, and this one’s a mobile work performer.

and the bad…

As fast as the 256 GB NVMe SSD hard drive is going to be, I would rate this as being the SMALLEST of hard drive sizes I would purchase. However, if you are not someone who stores a lot of large files locally, this is more than enough space for you. If not, you might want to think about moving to the newer model of the Flex 5 that has a lot of the same specs but a larger hard drive. Sadly though, you don’t get the sweet deal of $250 off.

Beyond the fact that I don’t understand why anyone who wants to sell a “gaming” laptop wouldn’t want to add a number pad to the right of the keyboard, you’ve got the real estate for it with a 17″ laptop. Accountants would agree with me. If you can get a number pad, add a number pad.

2. It’s not a touchscreen. Yes, I know, I know… it’s not a tablet or 2-in-1, its a laptop. And yes I know, I know, it’s a cost saving measure when you’re throwing so much other good tech in there. But I’m spoiled, ok? I want my laptops to have touchscreens now. I find myself using it more and more when I can. BUT, looking at it holistically, truly that’s not really needed on this type of laptop.

Final thoughts

I don’t even need a new laptop and I’m tempted to get this. It’s beautiful. For most, it will do everything you need it to do and then a lot more. The 4.8 star rating on Micro Center is well earned. ALL reviewers would recommend the product too. I’ve personally owned HP laptops and they served me well for a long time. And this one looks built to last and age well. Don’t walk, RUN to get this one if you’re looking for a powerful laptop. This really is one of the best computer or technology daily deals I’ve seen this year.

The Lightweight

If you are not looking for a powerhouse, this ASUS – Vivobook 17.3″ Laptop could be a winner for you. Best Buy currently has it for $499.99. That’s $200 off the regular price.

Again, this is not a powerhouse. Do NOT expect this to do rock Photoshop or video editing. This is the on the go lightweight laptop that 17″ laptop lovers could really appreciate for the quick everyday tasks while traveling or moving around the house.

The good…

Obviously it’s got that big 17.3″ screen that is LED backlit. It doesn’t have the resolution I would have liked to see though, only sporting a 1600 x 900 resolution screen (1080p SHOULD have been available, even at this price point in my opinion). It also is NOT a touch screen. 12GB of memory is good and can handle most of what you will need. The 1TB hard drive is awesome at this price point. But where this truly shines, beyond the 17″ screen, is the size. This laptop comes in at only 5.07lbs! On top of that it is only 0.84″ thin! That is VERY portable for a 17″ screen. On top of that you get WiFi 5 dual-band connectivity for even faster data transfers.

and the bad…

Now, what am I most disappointed with? The Battery. The battery is only a 2-cell lithium-ion battery. That means you don’t get the best battery life compared to a 3 or 4-cell battery. Not a deal breaker for me, but a consideration based on how you might use it. I already mentioned the resolution and lack of a touch screen, but those likely were to balance the power hungry nature of more a more advanced screen. (Your laptop screen is one of your biggest power draws on a laptop battery). Also the integrated graphics card is not optimal for me personally. It comes with a Intel HD Graphics 5000. This is going to allow you to Netflix and chill, connect it to a TV via the HDMI port, and do some basic games. It’s a very budget friendly and non-power hungry option.

You also have to weigh your options regarding the operating system here. It comes with Windows 11 Home in S Mode. S Mode restricts the types of apps that can be installed. If you’re a person who just downloads apps from the Microsoft Store, you’re probably going to be fine. Plus you’ll get to take advantage of the added security aspect of S Mode in that case. If you want to install other apps, you’ll want to upgrade this to the full version of Windows 11, which appears you might be able to do for free. I would confirm that with Best Buy before purchasing.

Final thoughts

I think this is a great option for those who do not demand a lot from their laptops. If you’re going to be browsing the internet, streaming some movies (or watching some locally stored movies on that MASSIVE 1TB hard drive), or doing some home work with Microsoft Office apps, then this is a fantastic laptop for you. Did I mention that I love the 17″ screen…
