Like many of you, I use a mouse all day long. After a long day, I find myself often rubbing my wrists without even thinking about it. I’m sure you’ve done it a few times even if you haven’t noticed, or at least rolling your wrists to stretch them out. The stress put on your wrists while using a mouse all day can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. (Read more about carpal tunnel syndrome here.)
Throughout the years, mouse companies have created different styles of mice to try to alleviate this, and some have gained adopters. However, they have not gone mainstream because they are just TOO different from a “normal” mouse. Enter Logitech’s Lift Vertical Ergonomic mouse.
The Right Ergonomic Design
This could be the first ergonomic mouse to go mainstream. Why? Although it looks a little odd, the Lift Vertical still FEELS like the mouse you’re used to using. But this design is engineered to put your forearm in a more relaxed and natural posture. It helps remove pressure being applied to your wrist when using a flat mouse by adding a 57° angle, like that of a handshake. With added curves near the base, the mouse also supports the hand, providing even more stress relief to your forearm and wrist.
The rear third of the Lift Vertical is a softly textured grip, improving your ability to hold and move the mouse without feeling like you’re pulling and pushing it around as opposed to simply sliding it. Adding to it’s smooth gliding, Logitech made sure to make the clicks “whisper-quiet” to allow better focus and to “stay zen” as they say.
And there is even more design thought put into this mouse beyond that, if you can believe it. What about lefties? (I’m talking about the people who use a mouse with their left hand.) Surely, they are stuck not being able to partake of this unbelievably comfortable mouse. WRONG! Logitech is offering a lefty version of the Lift Vertical as well.
Okay. Well, what about small or medium size handed people? Of course, this mouse must be TOO BIG to be comfortable for them, right? WRONG AGAIN! Unlike a lot of “ergonomic” mice, the Lift Vertical was designed with small to medium hands in mind. In fact, Logitech has a whole different model that is extremely similar to the Lift Vertical specifically for those who have larger hands. Now let’s talk other another area wireless mice could see some innovation, the technical side. Don’t get me wrong, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But why not improve on pain points with current mouse design at the same time as make ergonomics more mainstream?
Battery Life. Logitech has been leading the way with battery life in their wireless mice and keyboards for a few years now. In the past, you were lucky to get 6 months out of a set of AA batteries when using a wireless mouse and/or keyboard. Now with the adoption of low energy Bluetooth technology, Logitech can squeeze two years out of that same set of AA batteries. And the Lift Vertical can do two years on a single AA battery, which is already included in the box.
Connectivity. Let’s be honest, Bluetooth is an amazing way to connect digital devices that are close to one another. Turn the device on, pair it, and go. The Bluetooth protocols help the devices talk and figure each other out and BOOM, you’re not even needing to install drivers for most types of devices anymore. But if you’ve worked in IT long enough, you know that Bluetooth isn’t perfect. And through Murphy’s Law, of course it doesn’t work when you need it to the most. That’s why I love that this mouse includes a Logi Bolt USB receiver so you can be sure your connection will always be there when you need it. On the go a lot? No problem, just store the USB receiver on the bottom of the mouse in the battery compartment so it doesn’t go missing.
What if you want to use the Lift Vertical with multiple devices though? Gone are the days you have to disconnect and reconnect or buy separate mice! With the Easy-Switch button on the bottom of Lift Vertical, you can effortlessly switch between up to 3 different devices. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE… Thanks to its Logitech Flow technology you can even move files between those devices.
Add in the fact that you can also customize button shortcuts on it, comes in three colors (Graphite, Rose, and Off-White), and that it’s made from 70% recycled plastic (for the Graphite color, 54% for the Rose and Off-White) and this mouse could be a game changer.
But it can’t be that easy to use, can it? According to Logitech, 80% of users reported being able to use the Lift Vertical effectively on day one. Also, 80% of users with smaller hands reported improved posture from day one as well. 70% of users also reported “great comfort” as an identifier from day one. Now these are all out of a study commissioned by Logitech of 60 people, so take it for what it is worth. In my eyes though, having worked with several “ergonomic” or specialty type mice for some of my users who had a medical need, the Lift Vertical seems to be much easier to use and able to be adopted quicker than any other I’ve seen. Personally, I know that my hand sits at about a 50-60% angle when I’m letting it rest over the mouse, such as while I’m reading and not moving it. So, it makes sense that this would be the ideal angle and support design for the average person to help keep them from degrading their wrist and avoid that dreaded carpal tunnel syndrome.
So could this be the most comfortable mouse ever? If it isn’t, I think it could at least be the mouse that changes how we see “normal” mouse design.
